Reasons to Have Your Newborn Session at Home

Updated: Apr 20, 2020

Newborn sessions are a beautiful, timeless way to preserve the first new moments and memories with your precious new baby. Many people love going to a studio for their session but here are a few reasons why having your session at home could be the best option for you.

Familiar Surroundings

I truly believe newborns are calmed by their mother’s smell (many times all they need is moms’ shirt wrapped around them to settle down). Where would mom’s smell be concentrated most than in her own home? Having a relaxed, familiar and comforting environment for baby (and parents) ensures that no one is nervous or anxious being in a new place. Allowing mom and dad to be calm and relaxed at home, allows the baby to feel that way as well.

Baby’s First Home

There aren’t many families that stay in one home for the duration of their kids' lives. Many times, families relocate and children don’t remember their first home. In-home sessions aren’t meant to only capture the new baby but also their very first safe space where they’ll learn, grow and play. Maybe it's including a rocking chair next to a gorgeous picture window where you’ll rock your baby to sleep for the first time, or a framed photo of relatives that are no longer with us. Capturing moments with these special details can only happen at home.

Less Exposure to Germs

I am always hesitant to bring my (now older) kids out to too many public places when its full blown flu season every winter. That being said, with newborns who have virtually no immune system, they are even more susceptible to the airborne viruses that are so prevalent (especially the fall/winter babies). Having your baby stay home in a clean environment where you’re in control allows you to have peace of mind in maintaining baby’s health.

Timing and Schedule

Babies are born with their own schedule and staying home for a session allows for lots of time for feeding/changing/snuggles to keep them as happy and calm as possible. I make sure we schedule enough time for a laidback and relaxed session.

In addition, we all know babies come with tons of stuff and sometimes it feels like you need a trailer to haul everything. Instead, why not relax at home, not worry about packing outfits, diapers, strollers, blankets etc. and have me come to you!

Natural Posing

Of course all the babies posed in beautiful outfits are gorgeous but I also think babies naturally snuggled in their parent’s arms are just as stunning . I’m all about posing families as organically and comfortably as possible. Some babies aren't big fans of being swaddled and others love it! Some babies want to spend most of their time snuggled up on someone’s chest and that’s great! I’ll let your baby lead the way so we can get some beautiful shots.

Siblings and Pets

For the babies that are coming home to a big sister or brother, they’ll get to experience another beautiful relationship that will change and grow along with them. I try to make older siblings feel like superstars and give them some special time in front of the camera. They're generally more cooperative and relaxed if they’re in their own home as well. I let them introduce me, show me around and make sure they know that I’m not just putting all my attention on the new baby. If the big sister or brother and new baby is happy, sessions tend to go smoother.

I also try as much as I can to capture pets in the photos with you and the baby. Your pets are part of your family and they deserve to be present in your photos as well.

I hope this information helps you consider how easy and relaxed in-home sessions with your newborn can be. If you'd like more info, I'd love to hear from you!
